Implants play an increasing role in health care especially for an aging population where the biological machinery has been worn down. In Sweden around 90 000 artificial lenses 7000 hip prostheses and 6000 pacemakers are implanted on a yearly basis. The aim of the course is to give an overview of current implants and the special technological and clinical prerequisites that apply for these.


Passive Implants

Passive implants do not contain an energy source such as hip and breast prostheses.

Biomaterials for implants

Biomaterials for use in implants must meet strict requirements. In addition to exhibiting a good biological interaction biomaterials have to withstand the harsh chemical environment in the body.

Passive heart and vascular implants.

Aktive Implants

Active implants are implants depending on an energy source for their function. The implant can be used to treat or diagnose a disease, the pacemaker is the prime example of an active implant.

The artificial heart

The section is divided into two parts:1 The mechanics of the heart - a comparison with mechanical pumps presented by DR Stig Lundbäck who headed Astra's development of artificial hearts.;2 From left ventricualr assist devices to artificial hearts presented by Göran Dellgren, sectionleader of the thorax department at Sahlgrenska University Hospital

Introduction to pacemakertechnology including basic electrophysiology of the heart and market aspects.

Implantable stimulators and sensors

A basic overview of implantable electrical systems. The central theme is pacemaker related sensors.

Neural Interfaces

Neural interfaces are used in treatment of neurological disorders and in neural prosthetics to substitute a lost sensory or motoric function. We will cover commercial examples such as the cochlear implants and deep brain stimulation electrodes as well as future devices for visual and cognitive prosthetics.
